George Houston (Master Coach)
George Houston trains head coaches in the technical aspects of competitive basketball and has done so the last 4 years in the Hooptime program. George Houston was head coach of the Juneau-Douglas High School Crimson Bears for fourteen seasons. As head coach, Houston won 279 games, 10 conference championships and a pair of state titles. Coach Houston was born in Juneau. He played on the Bears' state championship team in 1969 under the leadership of Clair Markey, the only person to have coached basketball at all three major levels in Alaska: high school, college, and professional (the CBA Anchorage Northern Knights.) As a student, Houston helped the Crimson Bears to the 1969 state title, and was named Alaska’s Coach of the Year three times in his eight-year tenure. In 1999, Juneau-Douglas produced its finest basketball star—Carlos Boozer, Jr., who was regarded as one of 1999’s top five college recruits who played for Duke University and now plays in the NBA.
Bob Saviers (Head Coach)
Coach Saviers is the Head Coach for Hooptime. Coach Saviers has coached at all levels from the grade school to high school ages and was instrumental in developing the Hooptime program. The teams have placed in many AAU and AAU/NCAA tournaments. Bob has his own basketball camps and provides assistance to all coaches where needed.
Kevin B. Casperson (Boys 4th-5th coach HoopTime 2018)Played three years of Jr. High basketball at Marie Drake.
Played three years of varsity basketball at Juneau-Douglas High School. Won State Jr. year, record of 30-1.
Played college basketball at three different levels; D1 (Montana Univ., JV's), Junior college (Ft. Steilacoom/Pierce CC, Tacoma, Wa.), NAIA (Univ. of Alaska-Southeast, Juneau, AK.)
Coached one year at collegiate level with Claire Markey at UAS.
Coached 11 years at JDHS - three with Coach Hamey, eight with Coach Houston as the head JV coach and the lead assistant.
With Coach Houston won eight straight SE titles, two state titles (yes, I helped coach Carlos Boozer).
Coached three years at Floyd Dryden Middle School with Robert Casperson as JV coach and lead assistant.
Coached Hooptime for two years.
Played in 20 years of Juneau Lions Club Gold Medal basketball tournaments. Inducted into JLC GM Hall of Fame in 2010.
Coached another four years at JDHS (for a total of 15 years of high school coaching) with Robert Casperson as the JV coach and head assistant.
Coached boys and girls teams in Juneau Parks and Rec. for two seasons
Gilbert Mendoza (Boys 4th-5th coach HoopTime 2018)Coach Gilbert Mendoza has coached various youth sports at different competitive levels throughout the years and is enthusiastically returning for his eighth year with HoopTime Basketball. During his tenure with HoopTime Coach Mendoza has coached teams at AAU tournaments in and out of Alaska. Gilbert enjoys instructing Juneau's youth and prides himself on instilling the values of hard work, dedication, and teamwork.
